Some of the sixth grade Wiley science students participated in a lab Wednesday, and the lab footage and some interviews with students will appear on KIDK out of Idaho Falls this Sunday- November 7, 2010. The spot will air both at 5:30 PM and 10:00 PM. The spot will again air on the Monday morning show between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM.

November 2 officially begins Quarter 2. In science we will be continuing in the same book called
WATER AND THE ATMOSPHERE.

November 2 & 3: As a special project this week, all science classes will be participating in a project called RIVER OF WORDS (ROW) which is an international art and poetry contest. The project will be directed through pARTners which coordinates and integrates the arts into the core academic classes. Artists in residence will be in the classrooms.

November 4 & 5: Study of oil spills and impact on the ocean environment. Lab activity: "Oil Spills, a Sticky Business": a simulation of oil spill cleanup methods.

November 8, Classes will be starting Chapter 3 " The Atmosphere" with the interactive text, myscienceonline.com, labs, quizzes and tests.

Conferences will be held November 9 & 10. (Tuesday and Wednesday). Notices of times will be sent home today.
All grades are posted on Power School. It would be helpful for you to go over your child's grades before conferences.

During this quarter, science classes will be doing a project called "Natural Disasters" which involves researching a natural disaster such as: Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Avalanches, Tsunamis etc. and doing a Power Point multimedia presentation. More details about this project will be forthcoming.We will begin this project November 15th!

Pearson Online Science

I know many of you at home and your kids here at school are frustrated with the Pearson Online Science activities and them NOT saving!

I too am frustrated, and have our rep from Pearson working on the issue. Our success rate has drastically improved, but there are still some glitches in the system. We hope to have it resolved by next week.

As of now NONE of the online assignments are being graded, but they are simply practice of the material we studied and practice in using the online component of the Pearson curriculum.

Constellation Project

CONSTELLATION PROJECT:

1. Choose the constellation you would like to learn more about.

2. Your first step is to understand your constellation scientifically. To complete your scientific information sheet, click here or here.

3. Your second step is to find 2-3 versions of the myth that describes your constellation. Click on each of the following to find your 2-3 versions. (Copy and paste each myth into one word document.)

You will need to work with your partner to answer the following questions. You will need to read and reread your myths to figure out the answers.

1. What is the purpose of your myth? What does it explain or teach?

2. Who is the main character of the myth?

How does s/he change?
Does she learn something or realize something at the end of the myth?
How is s/he different at the end?

3. List the God, Goddesses, Demi-Gods and/or Mortals in the myth. What do they do in the myth? How do they help us learn the lesson? (For more information about the gods, click here.)

4. Who do you think is the intended audience of this myth? OR Who was the myth written for?

5. How does the Constellation's shape show this theme, moral or message.

6. Someone determined this myth and this constellation were important for others to know at one point in history. Why do you think this message was thought to be important?

7. What culture does this constellation represent? (Hint: Roman, Greek, other?)

Now it is YOUR turn! What would the story behind the constellation be if it represented YOU and/or YOUR culture? (You have to use the same stars, but the picture can be different.) Your story can only be 1 page long and must follow the format below.

Example Myth:

My mother always said that birthdays should honor the mother not the birthday kid. She asked, "If the mother did all the work on the day, why doesn't she get the presents?" As Angel placed the birthday hat on her head, she remembered that question. It was as if the words were circling inside the hat, whispering their message into her ears. However, the screams, laughter, and excitement of the party, made it hard to remember the message.

Angel's excitement to eat cake and open presents made her yell, "Mom, hurry up! I don't have all day!" The look her mother gave her should have been enough to end her attitude, but instead she continued yelling. "You always ruin things! My friends are going to get bored if you don't hurry up!"

Before she knew it, the goddess Gaia appeared in the kitchen. She was beautiful. She filled the room with the Mother Energy for which she was worshiped. Gaia looked at Angel's mother and winked. She said to Angel, "So...it's your birthday?"

"Yes," Angel answered angrily, "and it's about to be OVER! Hurry up, Mom!"

Gaia asked gently, "Do you wish it was your birthday every day?"

"Yes, of course! MOM!!!"

Gaia said, with a twinkle in her eye, "As you wish..."

Before Angel could ask what she meant, she was a twinkle in the night's sky. She was hurled into the sky in the form of a droopy birthday hat to remind all children everywhere to honor their mothers every day, and especially on their birthdays.

Science To Go Labs (STG)

Today I had the kids select Science To Go Labs. Science To Go labs are at home labs, and are designed to bring science class to your house. This is a great opportunity for you and your 6th grader to do some science together at home. I have 12 different lab activities that the students may choose from, and they are dealing with water. If you or you child find another lab from a different source, by all means you are allowed to do it instead of doing one of the class provided labs. All STG labs need to be finished by OCTOBER 26th for quarter 1, and all labs need to be turned in with the accompanying cover sheet provided.

Quarter 1- 1 STG lab is required for 10 points, and each student has the opportunity to do 3 additional labs for extra credit!!!

Enjoy, and remember SCIENCE RULES!!!

First of all, thanks to those who got water samples over the weekend, it is much appreciated!

Due to a MAP testing schedule we will have to shake things up this week.

Monday- Same as originally planned
Tuesday- Periods 1,2,6 will have science and do tests on the water samples from all around the country. (6th period will also review for the test, as they will have science for a 2 hr block)
Wednesday- Periods 1,2,7 will have science. Periods 1/2 will do their review for the test, and 7th period will do the water testing and review for the test in their double period of science.
Thursday- Chapter 1 Test for all 4 classes!
Friday-Outside for WWMD testing. Dress accordingly, especially periods 1/2, it will be chilly outside for sure!

6th Grade Parent-Child Book Club

Introductory Meeting

Wednesday, October 14th

7 PM

TC Library Storytelling Room

Who:

Any interested student and an adult reading partner beginning in grade 6 and continuing through high school.

What:

Members and their reading partners meet approximately once a month for a discussion of the groups’ current reading selection. The format is much like an adult book club with friendly conversation, refreshments, and good companionship with those who share a common love of books, reading, and the sharing of ideas.

Where:

Groups meet in a variety of locations. Many meet in the cozy storytelling room at the TC Library. Some choose to meet in a family member’s home each month. Some HS groups have met at the JHHS in past years.

When:

Each group meets approximately once a month. Most groups meet in the early evening for about 1 ½ to 2 hours.

Why:

Book Club appeals to those students who love to read and enjoy discussing what they read.

Cost:

Books are provided through the generosity of the TC Library Foundation.

Bubbleology Lab

Today we did our first lab activity. We introduced the Scientific Method of Inquiry with a simple measurement lab. We focused on posing a question, creating a hypothesis, recording data and creating a conclusion. We also hit data collection and analysis and accepting or rejecting the hypothesis! A good learning experience right out of the gate. Photos to follow!

This Lab sheet is due tomorrow and will be each student's first recorded grade.
