Science To Go Labs (STG)

Today I had the kids select Science To Go Labs. Science To Go labs are at home labs, and are designed to bring science class to your house. This is a great opportunity for you and your 6th grader to do some science together at home. I have 12 different lab activities that the students may choose from, and they are dealing with water. If you or you child find another lab from a different source, by all means you are allowed to do it instead of doing one of the class provided labs. All STG labs need to be finished by OCTOBER 26th for quarter 1, and all labs need to be turned in with the accompanying cover sheet provided.

Quarter 1- 1 STG lab is required for 10 points, and each student has the opportunity to do 3 additional labs for extra credit!!!

Schedule Change!!

First of all, thanks to those who got water samples over the weekend, it is much appreciated!

Due to a MAP testing schedule we will have to shake things up this week.

Monday- Same as originally planned
Tuesday- Periods 1,2,6 will have science and do tests on the water samples from all around the country. (6th period will also review for the test, as they will have science for a 2 hr block)
Wednesday- Periods 1,2,7 will have science. Periods 1/2 will do their review for the test, and 7th period will do the water testing and review for the test in their double period of science.
Thursday- Chapter 1 Test for all 4 classes!
Friday-Outside for WWMD testing. Dress accordingly, especially periods 1/2, it will be chilly outside for sure!

If you are traveling somewhere this weekend, stop and grab a sample of fresh water from a lake or stream and bring it in to class so we can test and compare our water here with water elsewhere.

6th Grade Parent-Child Book Club

Introductory Meeting

Wednesday, October 14th

7 PM

TC Library Storytelling Room



Who:

Any interested student and an adult reading partner beginning in grade 6 and continuing through high school.



What:

Members and their reading partners meet approximately once a month for a discussion of the groups’ current reading selection. The format is much like an adult book club with friendly conversation, refreshments, and good companionship with those who share a common love of books, reading, and the sharing of ideas.



Where:

Groups meet in a variety of locations. Many meet in the cozy storytelling room at the TC Library. Some choose to meet in a family member’s home each month. Some HS groups have met at the JHHS in past years.



When:

Each group meets approximately once a month. Most groups meet in the early evening for about 1 ½ to 2 hours.



Why:

Book Club appeals to those students who love to read and enjoy discussing what they read.



Cost:

Books are provided through the generosity of the TC Library Foundation.

Back To School Night Changed!!

Due to a conflict with some other community and District events our 2009/2010 Back To School Night has been moved from 9/15 to 9/16. The time is still the same 6:30-8:00pm. This is a good opportunity for you to hear the detaisl of each of your child's classes and ask any questions you may have. Look forward to seeing you all here on the 16th!

Bubbleology Lab

Today we did our first lab activity. We introduced the Scientific Method of Inquiry with a simple measurement lab. We focused on posing a question, creating a hypothesis, recording data and creating a conclusion. We also hit data collection and analysis and accepting or rejecting the hypothesis! A good learning experience right out of the gate. Photos to follow!

This Lab sheet is due tomorrow and will be each student's first recorded grade.

Wow, I cannot believe how fast the summer flew by! It is time again for an exciting year in 6th grade science!!!

I am looking forward to meeting the sixth graders I do not already know, and welcoming the ones I know to the wonderful world of JHMS!
